MEXICO — Residents will have the chance to discuss and ask questions about the 2014-2015 town warrant during a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, in the Calvin P. Lyons Room at the Mexico Town Office.
The proposed budget for the 2014-2015 fiscal year is $3.03 million, town clerk Peggy Duguay said, which is an increase from the $2.98 million approved in 2013.
The general government and Police Department budgets saw the biggest increases at $25,890 and $18,602, respectively. The higher budget numbers were due to increases in salaries and insurance costs.
There also was an increase in the proposed budget for the Mexico Public Library, which is $2,212 higher than 2013 due to an increase in librarian salaries, insurance costs and the account set aside for purchasing books, while the Fire Department saw a $3,796 increase.
Duguay added that there will be two separate ballots for residents to vote on during the June 10 vote: one ballot for the municipal budget and another ballot for a road bond that would ask voters if the town should raise and appropriate money to finish paving Backingdom Road, Main Street and Alder Street.
Discussion about paving began at the April 8 selectmen meeting, when Selectman George Byam suggested an article asking voters to raise and appropriate money to finish paving the roads.
The board asked Town Manager John Madigan last month to find out the cost of finishing paving with the option to place an article on the warrant for the June 10 annual town meeting.
The selectmen subsequently voted 3-2 to place the bond question on a ballot for the June 10 vote.
