OAKLAND (AP) — A central Maine man is facing charges of seriously injuring his girlfriend’s twin 2-year-old girls.
David Devine, 25, of Oakland was arrested Friday on two counts of aggravated assault.
Police say he attacked and seriously injured the girls in their Oakland home earlier this month.
The girls were taken to a local hospital and then airlifted to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for treatment, the Morning Sentinel reported.
The district attorney for Kennebec and Somerset counties said Devine told police that a 4-year-old child at the home had injured the children with a lightweight plastic toy bat.
“The injuries are so severe that the story isn’t consistent with the medical report,” said district attorney Maeghan Maloney.
Devine is being held in the Kennebec County jail without bail pending a court appearance on Tuesday.
It was not immediately known if he is being represented by an attorney.
He also was charged with violating conditions of release from a past case.
