DIXFIELD — Police said a Weld man is scheduled to appear Friday in 11th District Court in Paris on several charges related to a police chase Wednesday night.

Cody D. Austin, 21, of 511 West Side Road, is charged with felony attempting to elude an officer, operating under the influence, driving to endanger and speeding at 30-plus mph over the limit, Dixfield Lt. Jeff Howe said Thursday.

Austin was arrested at 10:36 p.m. and taken to the Oxford County Jail in Paris, Howe said. A corrections officer said Austin was released on bail Thursday.

Howe said that at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dixfield officers Eric Bernier and Dustin Broughton were working on a safety belt enforcement and radar detail on Route 2 in East Dixfield village. They tried to pull Austin over for speeding but the vehicle “took off on Route 17 toward Jay,” Howe said.

While in pursuit, the officers radioed ahead for help from Jay police. Howe said Austin crashed his car into a ditch at the intersection of routes 17 and 4 in North Jay while trying to turn right at the traffic signal.

“He was driving too fast and crashed,” Howe said.

Austin wasn’t injured in the accident, Howe said.
