This is in response to a letter from Joseph Mailey, “Protect Social Security” (May 14).

I agree with his letter. Social Security was started between 1935-1937 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He had a brilliant idea to remove money from people’s paychecks each week to create Social Security for people in their retirement years, or disability, for years to come.

Congress is forever taking money from the Social Security reserves and replacing it with IOUs. We sure can’t live with IOUs, that is for sure.

It seems that retirees have been forgotten. Two years ago, we didn’t have a raise in benefits. Everything has gone up, except our Social Security payments.

Let’s not forget the seniors.
