Tracey Levesque has resigned from her Ward 4 seat on the Auburn School Committee because she unexpectedly moved out of the ward.

Levesque, who chaired the committee, resigned Wednesday night. She was six months into her second term on the board. 

Levesque initially ran for her seat in 2011 because she was concerned about the school system’s initiative to give an iPad to every kindergartner. 

“Am I 100 percent with the iPads right now? No. I still think there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done with that,” she said Thursday. “But there are things that are going on in Auburn, with the schools, with the students, that are phenomenal. The teachers and administrators should be praised for it.”

She said she enjoyed her time on the board.

“It’s a different perspective. Anyone can come forward and they can complain and they can say, ‘You’re doing this wrong,'” she said. “Until you go in and you’re involved, you get a very different perspective.”

Levesque said she and her husband had planned to build a house in the area but found an already-built home in Ward 1. They closed on the house two weeks ago and are selling their Ward 4 home.

Two of the Auburn School Committee’s eight seats are now vacant. Mike Farrell resigned his Ward 1 seat in March to pursue “a couple of great opportunities for my family.” His seat will be filled through a special election in August.

Although Levesque could run for that open seat, she said she wouldn’t have enough time to take out papers, get signatures and meet the people of Ward 1 while settling her family into a new home and selling her old one.

The Auburn City Council must decide when an election will be held to fill Levesque’s Ward 4 seat. It will remain vacant until the election.
