WOODSTOCK — The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday evening authorized Town Manager Vern Maxfield to get prices for concrete box culverts.

At the May 6 board meeting, Selectman Ronald Deegan suggested that the town “start seeing what the money looks like” for installing concrete box culverts on Concord Pond Road.

Maxfield said Wednesday that three miles of the dirt road is in Woodstock and for the past two years the town reclaimed and resurfaced two miles of it.

“Within those three miles are two small streams, and one of them has become a problem,” Maxfield said. “There’s a certain point in the stream where there’s a 90-degree turn, and instead of turning, the water goes straight across the road. It seems like we’re fixing that section of the road on a semiannual basis.”

“The people voted to let us use $40,000 … toward Concord Pond Road,” Deegan said. “This road has been a headache to us, with all the washouts, and I think it’s time we get an idea of what it’s going to cost us.”

In other business at the meeting at the Town Office, Maxfield told selectmen that the town is attempting to correct the violations that the Bureau of Labor Standards found during an inspection of town facilities.

Maxfield said he asked the Bureau of Labor Standards if they’d be willing to reconsider the amount, since they were making efforts to fix the problems.

Maxfield also told selectmen that the Union Church Committee would meet for the first time at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 28.

Discussion on the church began during the annual town meeting March 24. Voters originally were asked whether to raise and appropriate up to $4,500 to make repairs to the granite foundation. Several residents said they wished to see the church repaired; some said they believed the building should be sold or torn down.

Residents voted against raising the money and voted to form a committee to figure out what the best course of action would be.

There will be six residents sitting on the committee, Maxfield said.

Selectmen also unanimously voted to award three $400 scholarships to three Woodstock School students: August Abbott, Alexandria Risko and Jennifer Wakefield, all of Woodstock. The money is for their future education.
