LIVERMORE FALLS — Students in the Spruce Mountain High School alternative education program and RSU 73 Adult and Community Education have built a brick mock-up of a new high school sign.

Masonry instructor Richard Ciarcia, owner of CRC Masonry of Livermore, said the model is 4 by 5 feet.

Alternative education teacher Chris Ellingwood said he expects the sign will be twice that size. The six students built it on their own time, he said.

Student Tyrone Chretien said he likes working hard and hopes to become a mason. When he graduates in June, he plans to get a job so he can buy masonry tools, he said.

High school senior Dalton Autrey said he also enjoyed working on the project.

“I want to be physically fit,” he said. Working all day and lifting items will help him achieve that, he said.

He, too, plans to work after graduation so he can buy masonry tools.

Ciarcia said the model will be dismantled and the bricks used for other projects.

Ellingwood said the masonry program provides students with a chance to explore career opportunities.

Adult Education Director Eileen Miazga said she was pleased with the partnership with the alternative education program. She is working to provide opportunities for other students in RSU 73, she said.
