FARMINGTON — A local volunteer coordinator and a band were recognized Thursday with 2014 Salt & Light Awards for partnership in ministry for helping make life better for others.

The Farmington Area Ecumenical Ministry, a group of nine churches in the area, held its annual meeting at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Farmington.

During the meeting, a Salt & Light Award was presented to Nancy Teel, volunteer coordinator for the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area in Farmington, and to Shepherd’s Pie, a Farmington area band, for their contributions to help the ministry in various ways accomplish its mission to help people in need.

Teel was recognized for her creative contributions to the community and encouraging people to volunteer for the good of all, the Rev. Susan Crane said.

Shepherd’s Pie members were recognized for all they do to help raise money for the Ecumenical Heating Fund, she said.

Crane read a Bible passage, Matthew 5:13-16, on which that the award is based.

“You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid.

“No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to the your Father in Heaven.”

Ministry member Rita Kimber said that Teel received the award for her amazing contributions through the Indoor Storm Window project and the wonderful spirit of volunteerism that you have generated by inviting us all to ‘give back’ and help one another save money on fuel. We are most grateful for your involvement in the Warming Center, for the wonderful community murals, and the way you honor and encourage each person’s gifts.”

To four members of Shepherd’s Pie in attendance, Crane said, the award was given with grateful thanks for all you do to help FAEM raise thousands of dollars for fuel assistance each winter by playing for the Inaugural Ball, Warm Hearts-Warm Homes, Heat Dance, Heat Dance II and Heat Dance III.

“In every aspect — planning, promotion, preparing for the party and playing for the dance — your commitment to our neighbors in need is truly awesome. May we have the next dance, too?”

That brought laughs and a “yes” from the group.

During the past two dances, more than $36,000 was raised, Crane said.

Band member Tim Wallace thanked Crane for all of her work she has done.

Another member of FAEM thanked all in the room for everything they do to help people.
