MEXICO All classic, street rods, rat rods and vintage cars, trucks and vans are welcome at the third annual Mexico Cruise-In to be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 29.

Sponsored by the Mexico Firefighter’s Relief Association and The Tired Iron Cruizers Car Club, the event will be held in the plaza behind the Mexico Town Hall and fire station. The rain date is the same time on Friday, May 30.

“We’re praying for sunshine, because this has been a bad winter and not a very good spring,” Cruizers member Tim Pingree of Mexico said Wednesday afternoon.

Pingree brought his 1969 Camaro to the fire station to tell onlookers about the Cruise-In. He was joined by club members Skip Reed with his 1938 Chevy pickup truck and Jim Naples with his 2002 corvette. Both are from Mexico.

Pingree described the event as a night of socializing, food and music. The firefighters’ relief association is holding a barbecue as a fundraiser, selling burgers, hot dogs and drinks. Additionally, Rosie Susbury of Byron will have an ice cream cart at the event.

Pingree said that Susbury donated funds from sales to the Fire Department last year.

For $3 a ticket, the car club will raffle off a “Jim’s Bundle No. 1” meat package from Naples Packing Co. of Mexico. It consists of four pounds of hamburger, four pounds of bacon, four pounds of ribeye, five pounds of boneless chicken breasts, four pounds of boneless pork chops and a dozen extra-large eggs.

Money from that raffle will go toward raising money for next year’s Cruise-In, Pingree said. There also will be a 50/50 raffle. Car drivers are also eligible for door prizes, and the first 100 cars will receive dash plaques, which were donated by Mexico fire Chief Gary Wentzel of Wentzel’s Autobody.

Pingree said Advance Auto has donated a prize, and Reed is making a homemade trophy for the owner of the best vehicle at the Cruise-In. He said Mexico firefighters will choose the vehicle they like the best to win the trophy.

Disc jockey Dan Richards will provide classic Golden Oldies music for the cruise-in.

Pingree said club members were expecting 50 to 60 cars at the debut 2012 Cruise-In and got 104 cars.

“Last year, we got 126 cars, so hopefully, we’ll do a little more than that this time,” he said.
