MEDFORD, Mass. — Playing their second game of the day, Bates held Tufts University to just four hits, but the Jumbos captialized on nine walks and three hit batsmen to earn a 7-1 victory in an elimination game of the NESCAC championship Saturday afternoon.

The Jumbos extended thir lead to 6-0 in the top of the third, plating five runs on just two hits. Following a walk, single and hit batsman to load the bases with no outs, Bates managed a line out before permitting two runners to come home on consecutive hit batsmen.

The Bobcats chipped into the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth as senior Griff Tewksbury led off the frame with a walk. An error allowed Tewksbury to advance to second, and later come home on a double play ball.

Bates threatened again in the sixth as first-year Ryan McCarthy and Tewksbury each walked to start the inning. Senior Kevin Davis then shot a single into right field which almost scored McCarthy, but a pinpointed throw beat the rookie to the plate.

Bates 4, Amherst 2

WALTHAM, Mass. —   Bates College rallied for three runs in the eighth, and senior Dean Bonneau faced six batters over the last two innings as the Bobcats took a 4-2 win over Amherst College in an elimination game in the NESCAC Championship Saturday.

The Bobcats reversed the game’s momentum with three runs in the top of the eighth. Junior Rockwell Jackson started the inning with a single up the middle that glanced off the pitcher’s glove.

First-year Ryan McCarthy then laid a bunt down the left side. The third baseman fielded the bunt cleanly, but his throw was off the mark allowing Jackson to score. The right fielder attempted to throw out McCarthy at third, but his errant toss gave McCarthy the chance to come home and give Bates its first lead at 3-2.

Senior Griff Tewksbury followed with a double over the left fielder’s head, and senior Kevin Davis sent a double to left center to score Tewksbury to give Bates their 4-2 edge.
