Ron Freve receives a standing ovation from students and staff at Sherwood Heights Elementary School in Auburn on Wednesday. Freve will retire on Friday after serving as the school’s custodian for 20 years. “Ron told me specifically that he wanted nothing to happen regarding his retirement,” Principal Laura Shaw said. So, the entire school, along with Freve’s family, retired teachers and former students held a surprise assembly for him. Each class performed skits and sang songs in honor of Freve. Former student Matt Syphers came to say goodbye. Syphers attended Sherwood for seven years and was not the most attentive student, recalls retired kindergarten teacher Lee Hearn. “The only way I could get (Syphers) to pay attention in class was to use helping Ron at lunch as an incentive,” Hearn said. Freve was 10 minutes late to his own surprise party because he was making a coffee run at Dunkin’ Donuts for teachers, something he has done every day for years.
