AUBURN – The Woman’s Literary Union of Androscoggin County has reported that its Fairy Godmother Project Prom Gown Giveaway was a big success thanks to the many fairy godmothers who donated prom gowns, dresses, shoes, gloves, purses, shawls and jewelry.

The nonprofit organization received more than 225 gowns, had 65 girls register for prizes, and 55 girls found a gown for the prom.

Gift certificates for prom-related items from many different businesses were given away to attendees whose names were drawn; they include: DaVinci’s Italian Restaurant certificate courtesy of Diane Belanger, Hunter Banks, Naples; DaVinci’s Italian Restaurant certificate, Simone Lauture, Portland; Power Bag from Electricity Maine, Chelsie Smith, Lisbon; Top It Frozen Yogurt Bar, Boel Olsson, Hebron; Maine Gourmet Chocolates, Emily Barnett, Monmouth; Republic Jewelry, Bridget Burke, Lewiston; Sweet Pea Designs, Caroline Bonenfant, Monmouth; teen facial by Debra Smith, Katy Albert, Lewiston, and Beka Stone, Mechanic Falls.

Those who received a free prom gown at the giveaway event in April are encouraged to “pay it forward” by returning their cleaned prom gown at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the Foss Mansion, 19 Elm St. Anyone can attend the Pay it Forward Tea at which admission will be a new or cleaned, gently used prom or wedding gown or $5 donation at the door.

WLU’s Around the World Doll Tea on April 26 and 27 attracted more than 350 guests. Winners of raffled items are as follows: doll settee, Katie Morgan; Vera Bradley bag, Jeanne Pacheco; Ukranian doll, Anna Johnson; African doll, Katie Hamilton; dark horse, Beverly Walker; big tea set, Jazmin Thibeault; small tea set, Onthao Vattaso; light horse, Katie Morgan; doll bunk bed, Sadie Mercier; and American Girl doll, Ava Ciriello.

Upcoming events at the Foss Mansion include a Youth Orchestra of Lewiston-Auburn concert at 7 p.m. Friday, May 9; a garage sale from 9 a.m. to 2p.m. Saturday, May 17 (rain date May 24); a concert featuring Larry Gowell from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, May 26, to celebrate Decoration Day; and an evening of Bunco, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 28.

These events are open to the public. Suggested donations of $5 at the door to benefit WLU’s mission.
