FARMINGTON — A debate between Democrats Emily Cain and Troy Jackson, who are running for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at the University of Maine at Farmington.
It will be held in Lincoln Auditorium of Roberts Learning Center and hosted by the UMF College Democrats, a student organization focused on promoting the cause of Democrats on campus.
State Sens. Cain, of Orono, and Jackson, of Allagash, hope to be their party’s candidate to replace U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud.
Questions for the debate have been generated by the Franklin County Democrats and UMF political science students. The event will be moderated by Jim Melcher, UMF professor of political science. It is free and open to the public.
Cain was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 2004 at age 24, and served four terms. During that time, she focused on growing Maine’s economy, increasing access to higher education, and preventing domestic violence.
In 2010, at age 30, she became the youngest woman to hold the position of State House minority leader in Maine history. She is serving her first term in the Maine Senate for District 30. She works as coordinator of advancement for the Honors College at the University of Maine.
A logger, Jackson represents Maine Senate District 35. He was first elected to the Senate in 2008 after serving from 2002-08 in the Maine House of Representatives. In December 2012, Jackson was elected assistant majority leader of the Senate. In July 2013, he was elected majority leader of the Senate.
