AUGUSTA — Maine has exceeded the federal government’s expectations with more than 44,000 residents enrolling in health insurance plans on the federal exchange.

The figures released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday show that 44,258 Maine residents selected plans on the Affordable Care Act’s exchange between Oct. 1 and April 19.

That’s nearly double the enrollment target of 23,000 set by President Barack Obama’s administration for the six month enrollment period.

Nearly 19,000 Mainers have signed up for coverage since March 1.

Maine is one 16 states that opted to use the exchange run by the federal government instead of crafting its own. Nationally, 8 million Americans picked plan on the new marketplaces, or exchanges.
