BELGRADE (AP) — A Maine mother is facing charges after her special needs son wandered away from home and had to be pulled from a stream five miles away by a stranger.

State police said 31-year-old Melissa Godin of Belgrade was issued a summons Tuesday on an endangering the welfare of a child charge.

The pre-teen, whose exact age was not disclosed, was wet but otherwise uninjured. Trooper Diane Perkins-Vance says Godin did not realize her son was gone until police brought him home.

The boy wandered off Monday morning and was found at 6 a.m. by a woman heading to work. She pulled him from the stream near Long Pond Storage Dam in Mount Vernon.

The rescuer, Patricia Stanton, told the Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/1rEwbzY ) the ordeal left her shaken.

Godin could not be reached.
