RUMFORD — Rumford Hannaford Store Manager Rick Landry recently presented a $1,000 check to Mountain Valley High School Principal Matt Gilbert.

The donation was the result of an annual effort by Hannaford stores, which set up displays in the fall where customers can “vote” by depositing their grocery receipts in slots designated for various schools.

Mountain Valley High School received the most “votes.”

According to Gilbert, the donation will be used to partially fund the school’s aspirations T-shirt award during the seniors’ final assembly. Each senior is presented a T-shirt from the college, university, trade school or military branch they will attend, providing a powerful visual message about aspirations for the underclassmen in the audience.

In 2013, the Hannaford Helps Schools program distributed $507,073 to benefit K-12 schools across New England and New York, with 2,908 schools participating.

In addition to MVHS, Hannaford helped other RSU 10 schools including Buckfield Junior/Senior High School, Dirigo Elementary School, Hartford-Sumner Elementary School, Meroby Elementary School, Mountain Valley Middle School and T.W. Kelly Dirigo Middle School.
