Pause for Pets Craft, Vendor Fair

LEWISTON — The Pause for Pets Craft and Vendor Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at the Ramada. It’s a fundraiser for the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society.

This is the fifth event planned by Lauren Odiorne and Shannon Vishe. They both started volunteering and Odiorne now has a part-time job at the shelter, although the work for Pause for Pets is not connected to her position.

Two fairs are held each year, in April and November, and each fair has resulted in a larger donation than the previous ones.

This is the largest event the women have planned with 52 vendors with 68 tables. Volunteers will be on hand to promote GAHS and its programs. Even the mascots, Scout and Callie, will be there for photos.

There will be raffles and door prize drawings, and there are vendors with lunch items, drinks and baked goods.

Research oncologist to speak

BRUNSWICK — Renowned Dana-Farber research oncologist Dr. Mary Taplin will be the featured speaker at the Bath-Brunswick Area Prostate Cancer support group at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, Mid Coast Hospital conference rooms. Admission is free and all are welcome.

While many men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer have the non-aggressive form, it can help everyone to understand the current research and learn about significant advances.

Her research has centered around clinical trials of immunotherapy and novel hormone therapies. Maine residents have successfully completed clinical trials with her.

Scholarship, grant support available

ELLSWORTH/PORTLAND — The Maine Community Foundation invites organizations that serve adult and nontraditional students to apply to the Adult Learner Partnership program.

The one-year pilot program will provide scholarship and grant support along with peer learning opportunities to up to five selected organizations that help adult learners transition into two- or four-year degree-granting programs.

Selected Adult Learner Partnership organizations will receive up to $5,000 from the Maine Rural Education Fund and up to $15,000 in scholarship support from the Musgrave Scholarship Fund of the Maine Community Foundation for students they enroll in two- or four-year degree-granting programs.

Workshop on cooking for crowds

FALMOUTH — The University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Cumberland County announces the spring schedule for “Cooking for Crowds Food Safety Training for Occasional Volunteer Cooks.”

This workshop is taught by Kathy Savoie, UMaine Extension educator.

The workshop offers up-to-date information on how to handle, transport, store and prepare foods safely for large group functions such as soup kitchens, church suppers, food pantries and community fundraisers. This class meets the Good Shepherd Food-Bank food safety training requirements.

It will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at the University of Maine Regional Learning Center, 75 Clearwater Drive Suite 104, Falmouth. The cost is $15; scholarships are available.

Aid for people with disabilities

WINTHROP — The Client Assistance Program is a federally funded, statewide advocacy program that provides information, referrals and advocacy to people with disabilities, who are applying for or are receiving services the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Division for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the Independent Living Program.

In Maine, the CAP is administered by C.A.R.E.S., Inc., an agency independent from state government. There are no fees for CAP services. C.A.R.E.S., Inc. is at 134 Main St., Suite 2C.

The CAP can help by providing information on available services, time frames for services and explanations of the federal regulations and state rules. When there is a disagreement between the client and DVR/DBVI/IL, CAP can get directly involved and advocate on your behalf.

Pasture management workshops

VASSALBORO — University of Maine Cooperative Extension is offering a free workshop on hayfield and pasture management from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the Vassalboro Grange on Route 32.

Rick Kersbergen, UMaine Extension educator in Waldo County, will lead the “Got Hayfields?” workshops, which focus on how to best manage hayfields and pastures to produce high-quality feed for livestock.

Similar programs will be held in Presque Isle on April 30, Lisbon Falls on May 14 and Springvale on June 3.

Farm tractor safety course

GRAY — University of Maine Cooperative Extension will hold a five-session farm tractor safety course on five consecutive Tuesday evenings starting April 29, at the Maine Forest Service Building on Route 26, 356 Shaker Road.

Individuals will receive practical training in the classroom, in the shop and on tractors. Participants should be at least 13 years of age to participate in this certified course. Adults are welcome to participate in the practical course.

Federation of the Blind meeting

ORONO — The National Federation of the Blind of Maine will hold their spring “at large” meeting on Saturday, April 26, in the American Legion at 156 Park St. All current and possible members are invited.

Registration will be from 9:30 and the meeting will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost will be $10 per person to cover the price of the lunch, which will be provided by the ladies of the American Legion.

FAIRFIELD — Registration for the summer and fall 2014 semesters at Kennebec Valley Community College is underway for all students. The summer semester begins May 19. The fall semester begins Aug. 25.

MPBN launches media for educators

LEWISTON — The Maine Public Broadcasting Network announces the launch of PBS LearningMedia on MPBN.NET as a new educational offering available to educators across Maine.

PBS LearningMedia, a partnership of PBS and WGBH Educational Foundation, is a web-based resource that provides preK-12 educators with access to free digital content for their classrooms designed to improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement.

The service currently offers more than 30,000 trusted digital resources drawn from critically acclaimed PBS programs such as Nova, Frontline, American Experience and PBS Kids programs like Sid the Science Kid, as well as federal agencies such as The National Archives and NASA.

Workshop: raised, container gardens

SKOWHEGAN — University of Maine Cooperative Extension will hold a six-class workshop on building, planting, maintaining and harvesting square-foot gardens in raised beds and containers.

Classes meet monthly from May through October at the UMaine Extension office, 7 County Drive. The first class is 9 to 11 a.m. May 1; the final class is Oct. 9.

Young Athletes Festival is May 23

FREEPORT — Special Olympics Maine will offer its second annual Young Athletes Festival from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 23, at the Frank H. Harrison Middle School in Yarmouth.

The event is for children ages 2 1/2 to 8 who have intellectual disabilities or autism. The festival will take place and will be conducted by Special Olympics Maine and the eighth-grade students from the school.

Participants will learn about catching, balance, striking, kicking, jumping, throwing and more. The children will also have a chance to enjoy parachute time, bubbles, face painting, a snack, music and more. Each participating child will also receive a T-shirt and a medal at the end.

The festival is free, and similar aged siblings or classmates are also invited.
