FARMINGTON — It is business as usual at the town’s Bulky Waste/Recycling Facility on Dump Road, off Farmington Falls Road, also known as routes 2 and 27.

However, some people are still asking Town Office staff if the town still collects recyclables, Town Manager Richard Davis said.

The answer is yes.

In fact, it is mandatory, according to the town’s website: www.farmington-maine.org/recycling-home. Every ton that is recycled saves a $65 disposal fee, according to the town’s brochure.

The town contracts with Archie’s Inc./J & J Disposal of Mexico, Davis said. That company recently replaced the town’s 23-year membership with the Sandy River Recycling Association.

The change has caused some confusion.

Several people were at the facility Thursday morning taking care of their trash and sorting recyclables.

Through the efforts of townspeople, the town recycles about 50 percent of its waste, according to the town’s website.

The town also has a Swap Shop at the transfer station.

Acceptable items include housewares in working order, sporting goods, small appliances, toys in good condition with no loose or broken parts and tools.

Items not accepted are clothing, upholstered furniture, TVs, mattresses and refrigerators among other items.

The facility is open from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays.
