FARMINGTON — Mallett School students, along with their parents and staff members, are collecting returnable bottles and cans in a contest to win cash to pay for more activities, events, and supplies.

A bottle drive will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 12, at the school on Middle Street.

The school is participating in a CLYNK contest and has placed second and third in the past two years to win cash for the number of returnables collected. They compete against other schools.

CLYNK is a Maine recycling company with a bottle redemption system offered exclusively in Hannaford supermarkets in Maine. Its mission is to make recycling easier, to offer educational resources focused on recycling and to show customers how their personal recycling positively impacts the environment, according to CLYNK’s website, www.clynk.com.

Mallet School splits the money with the Parent Teacher Association, which also does programs, activities and other events for the school.

The school previously bought books for the library, weekly readers and paid for field trips, Principal Tracy Williams said. The school also gets the money for the returnables, she said.

Bags that have tags on them with a scanner code linked to the Mallett School are available at the school. Bags were given to each of the students at the school at the beginning of the contest in February, she said.

People can bring the tagged bags with returnables to the bottle drive or bring them directly to Hannaford. Those choosing to do the latter are asked to scan the code on the tag at the store.

The bottles and cans brought to the school Saturday that are not in tagged bags will be put in them so they can count toward the contest, Williams said.
