Dozens of women and girls were incarcerated in the prison at Thomaston in years gone by; some of them were convicted murderers.
“Maine Mothers Who Murdered” is more than the disturbing stories of more than 30 mothers, with details of their murderous acts and vivid courtroom accounts. Their desperate situations and interesting family life add to their untold stories. The book is a closer look our earlier criminal justice history and correctional system.
Dorey’s research led to discoveries about early conditions and staff at the Maine State Prison, the pardon process and the lack of services for female inmates. Never-before-published information fills three chapters about the state prison across five early decades.
