TURNER — In celebration of Maine’s fifth season and in keeping with a long-held tradition, the annual Mud Supper, sponsored by the North Turner Presbyterian Church, will be held on Saturday, April 5.

This unusual and fun public supper is held each year as a welcome to spring, a kick down the road to winter and in recognition of the hardiness of Mainer’s who survive that winter, shuck through the mud and celebrate the arrival of spring.

Mud Supper does not feature mud but instead many things brown ranging from golden mac and cheese, ham with a maple syrup glaze, brown beans to shepherd’s pie and all things chocolate including pie, cake, cookies and dirt cake.

This supper marks the beginning of public supper season for the North Turner Church and allows community members to get out of the house, enjoy some great food and visit with their neighbors who have also been hidden away for several months. Come celebrate the end of winter and the promise of spring even if we have to march through the mud to get there.

This year’s celebration will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the GAR Hall on Route 219, Howes Corner Road, about 1/4-mile east from the intersection of Routes 4 and 219.

There is no set price but goodwill donations are taken at the door. Proceeds from this supper go to the church’s outreach activities including the Turner Food Bank, the Community Clothing Center, its heating assistance program and Sunday School program.
