ROXBURY — The Roxbury ATV Club will be hosting a free safety course for residents from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the Roxbury Town Office, club vice president Roland Patneaude said.

Patneaude said the ATV Club, with the assistance of the Mexico Police Department, has been hosting safety courses for ATV riders for “more than eight years.”

“I’ve been doing it for at least eight years and I know they’ve been doing it longer than that,” Patneaude said. “We’ve had a lot of people who have taken our course, and I think it really helps keep people safe.”

Patneaude said that a series of ATV instructors will teach those who attend the safety course about the mechanics of an ATV, the different laws that riders should follow and how to stay safe while riding through the trails.

The safety course is open to both young and old riders, Patneaude said, adding that parents are required to tag along with their children.

“We make the parents come along for the course when we’re dealing with riders who are under the age of 18,” Patneaude said. “Most times, when we go through some of the different laws and requirements that ATV riders have to follow, the parents will go, ‘Wow, I didn’t know about this.’ They’re in awe about some of the laws out there.”

Patneaude said that he is hoping that Maine Warden Brock Clukey will be able to attend and speak at the safety course.

A free lunch will be served at the safety course by the Roxbury ATV club, Patneaude said.
