State Sen. James Hamper, R-Oxford, instructs Camilla Hafstab of Molde, Norway, on how to use the gavel at the rostrum in the Maine Senate Chamber in Augusta on Friday. Hafstab is an AFS exchange student attending Ellsworth High School. She was among a group of AFS students who participated in a day of mock legislative hearings and sessions. Hamper has long hosted AFS students at his home and in recent years has helped instruct them during their day at the State House in Augusta. “I take them through the process of legislation,” he said.
