NEWRY — A woman was taken to Rumford Hospital on Tuesday evening after the vehicle she was driving hit a patch of ice and rolled over, Newry fire Chief Bruce Pierce said.
Pierce said the woman, whose name was not released, was driving an SUV around a corner near Quartino’s Restaurant on Skiway Drive when she hit a patch of ice and lost control of the vehicle.
“Her car drove onto an embankment, drove up into a tree, stopped and rolled over,” Pierce said.
Fire departments from Newry and Bethel responded, along with Med-Care Ambulance and the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.
Pierce said the woman was trapped inside her vehicle and the Bethel Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to get her out.
“She received minor injuries,” Pierce said. “She was able to walk herself to the ambulance, where she was then taken to the Rumford Hospital. I’m not sure what her status is right now though.”
Gaudreau’s Repair in Bethel towed the SUV away, Pierce said. He also called Cross Excavation to Skiway Drive to sand the road.
“That corner on Skiway Drive is notoriously bad,” Pierce said. “The sun isn’t able to get all the way through the trees, so it gets pretty icy.”
