WINTHROP — A 71-year old local man was killed Thursday morning in a head-on collision that shut down Route 202, according to police.
Richard Leighton, 71, was heading west in his GMC pickup around 7:30 a.m. when an eastbound SUV driven by Bobbie Reeves, 39, of Winthrop, apparently crossed the center line, Winthrop police Chief Joseph Young said.
Leighton’s pickup had a snowplow attached to the front of it, according to Young. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident occurred near the intersection of Horseshoe Road, the police chief said. Road conditions were poor at the time of the crash.
“It was pretty sloppy when I got there,” Young said.
Young added that the investigation is too young to determine whether road conditions were a factor.
Reeves was transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with undisclosed injuries, according to Young.
Route 202 has been reduced to one lane while state police reconstruct the accident.
Both vehicles were demolished.
