FARMINGTON — A local road race to raise funds to help prevent child abuse and neglect has caught the attention of U.S. military personnel in Kuwait.

While the Franklin County Children’s Task Force hosts its third annual 5K/10K and Kids Fun Run on May 10 in downtown Farmington, a Mainer stationed in Kuwait will organize a similar race there, Renee Blanchet, executive director of the Task Force, said.

Rachel Wallace was looking for a run to shadow there when she came across plans for the Children’s Task Force race and thought it was a great cause, Blanchet said.

“It was just a fluke that she came across ours,” Blanchet said. “We’re really excited and think it’s really cool to be partnering with those at Camp Patriot in Kuwait.”

Wallace contacted Blanchet and a flurry of emails began. Wallace will hold a race in Kuwait, complete with volunteers and timers. The task force will send T-shirts.

“Last year, we had a fantastic turnout and this year, we are super excited to be doing a shadow run with our military partners,” Blanchet said. “They will be running along with us, with all proceeds helping to provide community education programming in Franklin County, including our school-based violence prevention education through our Bullying Prevention Program.”

There will be a military discount for troop members, but it’s a great opportunity for the task force to increase participation while giving the military members something to do to feel connected, she said.

Those interested in participating may register online at www.active.com, keywords “Run to Prevent Child Abuse” and sign up for the run of their choice. Preregistration is encouraged.

The preregistration costs for adults is $20 for the 5K and $30 for the 10K. Registration on race day is $2 more. Race fees are tax deductible.

The first 50 who register will receive free running shirts. Some shirts will be available for purchase on the day of the race.

The race takes place Saturday, May 10, with registration and check-in starting at 7:30 a.m. at the task force office, 113 Church St. in Farmington.

For children under 12, the Kids Fun Run is free. They will race around the block and all will receive ribbons, she said in a press release. 

All ages are welcome to participate in the 5K, but no pets, bicycles, skateboards or rollerblades are allowed on the course.

Participants of the 5K/10K can pay by credit card online or by cash or check on the day of the race. Checks should be made out to FCCTF.
