FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners voted Tuesday to allow Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. to hire Andrew J. Morgan of Augusta as a patrol deputy, providing he passes a psychological exam.

Morgan will start April 1.

Commissioners gave Nichols conditional approval to hire a Winthrop man to fill the vacancy March 4, pending him passing examinations and a background check. Nichols told commissioners he did not work out.

Nichols recommended Morgan, who was one of six applicants for the position of Deputy Christopher Rhinhart who moved out of state.

Morgan is a corrections officer for the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, Nichols said. He passed a background check and polygraph examination and took a psychological examination Monday in Bangor, Nichols said. Officials are waiting the results of that, he said.

Morgan will need to attend the Criminal Justice Academy within a year of being hired.

In other business, Wilton fire Chief Sonny Dunham told commissioners he needs the proper paperwork for the Wilton Fire Department to cover Washington Township.

“It would be good to get something in writing,” he said.

The county has a contract with Weld Fire Department to cover Perkins Township and it expires June 30, county Clerk Julie Magoon said. The two townships are adjacent and are between Wilton and Weld.

Dunham said Weld and Wilton are part of a mutual aid agreement.

Wilton doesn’t get many calls in Washington Township and most are accidents. There were three calls last year, he said.

There is no money in the Unorganized Territory budget for 2014-15 to pay Wilton, but it can run as an overrun, Magoon said.

Commissioners requested Dunham to have the Wilton Board of Selectmen submit something in writing to the county on the matter.

Dunham asked for a copy of the contract that Magoon said is used for all towns providing services in the Unorganized Territory.

Commissioners voted to table action on the issue until the county hears from Wilton selectmen.
