HANOVER — A man from Mexico was killed when his car slid into a pulp truck on Route 2 southwest of Rumford on Friday.
Arland Burgess, 58, of Mexico was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo when he apparently hit a slushy section of the road and slid in front of the fully loaded log truck owned by Coffin Trucking of West Paris, Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant said.
He said Burgess was the only person in the vehicle. “Based on our initial investigation, it looks like he died on impact.”
The driver of the truck, David Abbott, 29, of West Paris, was not injured, Gallant said.
The collision near Brown Road tied up afternoon traffic at least a mile in both directions, according to initial reports.
Seven officers with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene around 3:45 p.m., followed by three Maine State Police officers, Med-Care Ambulance and the Rumford Fire Department.
Tractor-trailer rigs were redirected to Intervale Road, while passenger cars were directed onto Davis Road. As of 6:30 p.m., the accident reconstruction team was still investigating the crash, Gallant said.
