NEW PORTLAND — A Kingfield man with a suspended license was arrested Tuesday afternoon after rear-ending a car on Middle Road and leaving the scene, Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department said.
Michael S. Corcoran, 34, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, operating an unregistered vehicle and operating without a license, Lancaster said. Corcoran’s right to operate a motor vehicle had been suspended in Rhode Island, he said.
Somerset County deputies responded to a report of an accident at about 4:43 p.m. The 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Corcoran rear-ended a 2007 Kia Optima driven by Jessica Torrey, 31, of New Portland, Lancaster said.
Corcoran got out of his car after the crash and told Torrey he had no insurance and asked that police not be called. When Corcoran realized police were being contacted, he pulled a homemade knife out of his vehicle and fled on foot, he said.
Franklin County Sheriff’s Cpl. Christopher Chase and his police dog, Abby, assisted by State Trooper Reid Bond, tracked Corcoran across the Carrabassett River to Route 27 in Kingfield. Somerset County Deputy David Cole found Corcoran in Kingfield while the search was underway, Lancaster said.
“At this point in the investigation, it is believed that Mr. Corcoran made no physical threats,” he said.
