HARTFORD — An election to choose a selectman will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, at the Town Hall.

Town Deputy Treasurer Peggy Poskus’ name is on the ballot to fill the remaining two years of Zoe Cowett’s term. Cowett resigned Feb. 6.

Selectmen also serve as tax assessors and overseers of the poor.

Since Cowett’s resignation, Selectmen Lee Holman and Jack Plumley have tabled all decisions until the position is filled.

At Thursday night’s meeting, Plumley reported that trash is being piled outside a dumpster at a home on old Route 140, prompting complaints from neighbors. He said the garbage is nearly in the town right of way.

Holman said she will look at the site and have Code Enforcement Officer Bill Kennedy visit, if warranted.

Planning Board member Arthur Harvey told selectmen the board is reviewing a request to build a year-round home and three camper sites for family members on 5.6 acres on Bear Pond off Route 219.

Harvey said the board’s concerns are the possibility of the camper sites being rented in the future, making it a commercial enterprise, and the size and location of the septic system near the pond. Harvey said he has contacted state officials for guidance.

The Animal Control Officer Ozzie Hart reported taking several cats to McKennel’s Animal Adoption Agency in Rumford. The board learned that Kozy Kennels is opening in Hartford and Holman said if it will take strays, officials will use the local business.

A public hearing on the annual town meeting warrant is set for 6 p.m. June 5 in the Town Hall. Elections are scheduled June 10 and the annual meeting at 9 a.m. June 14 in the Town Hall.
