FARMINGTON — An RSU 9 school director was remembered Monday for being straightforward, positive, compassionate and dedicated to students’ education.
Robert “Bob” Flick, 82, of Farmington died March 4. He represented the town for about a decade. Flick’s term on the board was to expire June 3o.
Former RSU 9 Director Ray Glass of Farmington said he worked with Flick on the SAD 9/RSU 9 board of directors for several years.
Flick had not been at board meetings due to illness since late 2013.
“I miss him greatly,” Glass said. “He was a wonderful, wonderful colleague.”
“He was very straightforward,” he said. “You always knew where Bob stood. He always said what was on his mind.”
He was honest in his thoughts, and he was compassionate, positive and optimistic, he said.
“He was very supportive of the school system,” former RSU 9 Superintendent Mike Cormier said. Cormier retired from the district on June 30, 2013, after 20 years.
Flick cared deeply about children and the educational programs offered to them, he said, as well as the teachers and staff.
Flick served on several committees.
“He provided a lot of help to me,” he said.
“In my short time here in RSU 9, I quickly developed a great respect for Bob as a board member and human being, RSU 9 Superintendent Tom Ward said. “He was very supportive and proud of what the school district had accomplished. He became a good friend. I will miss him.”
“Bob was an active member of the board who read every book that came in front of the board,” RSU 9 Assistant Superintendent Leanne Condon said. “He worked to understand the issues and was a tremendous advocate for students and teachers. He always had a smile for everyone; he will be greatly missed.”
Flick was a member of the Farmington Historical Society for more than a decade, President Taffy Davis said. He was president before Davis.
“He was a mentor to me,” she said. “He was a great person and a true believer in the history of the historical society, the history of Farmington and preserving the history of Farmington.”
His career was in education, including being an administrator at a New York high school.
“I was very sorry to hear of Bob’s passing,” Town Manager Richard Davis said. “He was a great friend of the community in many, many ways. I will miss his helpful, positive attitude and genuine caring for folks.”
