OXFORD — A Poland man was arrested outside the Oxford Casino on Monday night and charged with possession of an illegal “butterfly” knife.
Nicholas Ray Douglass, 23, was charged with violating conditions of his bail and trafficking in dangerous knives, both misdemeanor offenses.
According to Oxford police Chief Jon Tibbetts, Sgt. Rickie Jack was called to the casino at the request of security officers for an “unruly” patron.
“He was just being disorderly, obnoxious, and security wanted him to leave,” Tibbetts said.
Jack encountered Douglass and suspected he had been drinking, in violation of his bail conditions, Tibbetts said. Jack smelled alcohol on Douglass but could not test him because Douglass was uncooperative, Tibbetts said.
According to jail records, Oxford police arrested Douglass in late December, also on violation of bail conditions.
After arresting Douglass, Jack searched him and found the butterfly knife, Tibbetts said.
The knives have a handle that is split in half and can be swung open, like a hinge, exposing the blade. Possessing one is considered a class D crime in Maine and conviction carries a maximum penalty of one year incarceration and a $2,000 fine.
According to the Oxford County Jail in Paris, Douglass was released Tuesday morning on $750 cash bail.
