HARRISON — Harrison Parks and Recreation will hold their annual Youth and Family Ice Fishing Derby from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at Long Lake boat launch. This event is sponsored by Western Maine Fish & Game Club in partnership with Maine’s Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s “Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs.”

Tickets can be purchased at the Harrison Town Office between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday until Friday, Feb. 21, and then on the day of the derby at the boat launch at the head of Long Lake beginning at 7 a.m.

The fee for the derby is $2 for ages 15 and under and $5 for ages 16 and up.

The derby is sanctioned by IF&W, meaning adults who are not actively fishing can assist their children without a Maine fishing license but are required to register with the derby and are required to fish in the sanctioned area. For this derby, only fish caught in Long Lake are eligible for prizes.

Harrison’s Western Maine Fish & Game Club is donating a license to a child who catches the smallest legal fish based on weight with the discriminator being length. Harrison Parks and Rec. will donate a license to a youth age 6-15 who catches the largest fish with discriminator being largest of most different species caught.

First 100 children registered ages 0-15 will receive a Tip Up and each category winner will receive a prize and a chance to win a youth lifetime fishing license. All participants will have the option to have an ice fishing demonstration and instructions in the sanctioned area

Live bait, donated by the Market Basket in Harrison, will be available along with hot cocoa, hamburgers and hot dogs off the grill and marshmallows for roasting over an outdoor fire.

Announcement of derby and raffle winners will take place at 4 p.m. at the Harrison Town Office. Participants do not have to be present to win a raffle or derby prize.

A number of raffles will be available for $1 per ticket. Items include cords of wood, propane, fishing equipment, gift certificates and more.
