RUMFORD — A snowmobile was destroyed and a garage damaged in a fire Monday afternoon, Fire Department Deputy Chief Richard Coulombe said.

The garage at 14 Taggart Road is owned by Dave Glover and housed several cars, snowmobiles and ATVs, though Coulombe said he was unsure if any of the other vehicles were damaged.

There were no injuries, he said. A large section of the back of the garage sustained fire damage.

The cause is currently unknown, though it is likely a faulty snowmobile, Coulombe said.

“There were a couple of people inside the garage working on a snow machine,” he said. “The snow machine was inside of a little booth they had set up inside of the garage. They were able to get the snow machine running and left the room to get gasoline. When they came back into the room, the entire machine and room was engulfed in flames.”

“We quickly got the fire knocked down,” the deputy chief said, using firefighting foam and water from a portable tank.

Rumford, Mexico, Dixfield and Peru fire departments were dispatched shortly before 3:30 p.m., along with Med-Care Ambulance Services. They left the scene around 4:30 p.m.

Coulombe said further investigation is necessary to determine a definite cause.
