PORTLAND (AP) — Emergency care at Maine’s hospitals has received high marks from a national physicians group, even though there is plenty of room for improvement.

Maine was ranked third in the nation for providing emergency care services in a report card released Thursday by the American College of Emergency Physicians.

The group based the rankings on how each state performed in five categories: access to emergency care, quality and patient safety, medical liability, public health and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness.

Maine received an F in disaster preparedness, but overall received a B-minus.

Gordon Smith, executive vice president of the Maine Medical Association physicians’ group, told the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1b0oOP1 ) he doesn’t agree with all of the findings in the report but says it is still something to be proud of.
