NEW VINEYARD — One driver was killed and another injured in a two-vehicle accident Monday afternoon on Route 27.
Police said Samantha Wright, 38, of Kingfield died at the scene, which was about 100 yards south of the intersection of the Holly Road.
Wright was driving a 1999 Dodge minivan north and Craig Gage, 23, of Saco was driving a 2006 Ford E250 van south, Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols said. The Ford van was owned by National Distributors Inc. of South Portland.
Gage was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Nichols said.
Witnesses traveling behind Gage’s van told police they saw it drift into the shoulder of the road where there was an accumulation of ice, Nichols said. The driver overcorrected and the van crossed the centerline into the path of the minivan, he said.
The witnesses drove their Jeep off the road to avoid the collision and were not involved, he said.
The accident was reported at 2:06 p.m.
Deputy Matthew Brann was assisted by Nichols, Chief Deputy Steven Lowell, Lt. David St. Laurent, Detective Stephen Charles, Detective Ken Charles and Cpl. Nate Bean.
New Vineyard Fire Department, Farmington Fire and Rescue, and NorthStar rescue personnel also assisted.
Route 27 was closed for more than two hours. The accident is still under investigation.
