SOUTH PORTLAND (AP) — A synagogue in South Portland has been listed by news and entertainment website Huffington Post as one of 50 “stunning” synagogues and temples around the world.

Located just off Main Street, Congregation Bet Ha’am’s temple could easily be overlooked by passers-by. But behind its garden walls, there’s a reflecting pool and a dramatic, sweeping concave roof.

The Portland Press Herald said the temple was featured in gallery showcasing 50 temples and synagogues.

Congregation Bet Ha’am, which formed in 1985, moved from location to location before renting the former Sawyer Elementary School from the city of South Portland in 1994. The congregation stayed in the former school, using classroom space for the sanctuary, until it outgrew the building.
