PENOBSCOT — A single-car accident sent two to the hospital on Thursday, with the passenger requiring emergency back surgery, according to a prepared statement released by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

Jennifer Gulya, 44, was driving on Route 199 when she lost control of the 2006 Buick Rainier, which drove off the road, rolled onto its side, then came to rest against a fir tree, according to the statement issued Friday morning.

Gulya was taken to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and was later released, but her passenger, Joshua St. Pierre, 22, was taken by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he underwent surgery for a broken vertebrae, the statement said. The hospital had no comment on the case.
