PERU — At Monday night’s regular meeting, Selectman Larry Snowman presided in the absence of Chairman Jim Pulsifer.
At their Nov. 25 meeting, selectmen had decided to send a certified letter, drafted by Pulsifer, to the Peru Recreation Committee, in care of former Selectman Tim Holland. Selectmen discussed the fact that there has been no response to this certified letter to the committee.
Secretary Angela Barkhouse said the town has neither received notice that the certified letter had been delivered nor received the letter back.
Town Clerk Vera Parent said she believed the post office tried for two weeks to deliver certified mail before returning it to the sender.
In the past, the Recreation Committee raised additional funds to supplement those furnished by the town. While there seems to be agreement over the town’s duty to oversee the expenditure of town funds, there has been uncertainty about who has authority to spend funds raised by the committee.
Pulsifer and Parent reviewed the town records on Recreation Committee expenditures before he drafted the letter to the committee.
Selectmen agreed with the Planning Board decision to deny a building permit to Brad and JoAnne Hutchings for expansion to their house. The denial was based on shoreland zoning.
Snowman announced good news for users of Worthley Pond Spring. The latest tests were negative, indicating that the spring water is safe.
Selectmen will review proposals for a town seal at their next meeting, Dec. 16, at 6 p.m. Their intent is to select two or three of the entries, then ask voters to select their choice for the official seal at the next town election.
