Creative Writing students’ reading

FARMINGTON — UMF student writers in Maine’s only Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program will read from their original work at the University of Maine at Farmington fall 2013 Creative Writing Senior Reading. This free and open-to-the-public reading will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, in The Landing in the UMF Olsen Student Center.

Held twice a year, this event features graduating seniors reading from their portfolio of original works in poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Participating students include Alex Beloin, from Camden; Mary Drover, Peabody, Mass.; Nicole Ellis, Litchfield; Melanie Floyd, Long Island; Zach Fowler, Presque Isle; Sean Igoe, New Haven, Conn.; Jamie Phillips, Willington, Conn.; Hunter Rowell, West Paris; Ashley Smith, Brunswick; and Meagan Winker, Cape Elizabeth, all of whom have just completed the Senior Seminar in Creative Writing.

College planning workshop Dec. 12

WILTON — The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will host a free workshop, “Essentials of College Planning,” for adults ages 19 and up at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at the Wilton Career Center, 865 U.S. Route 2E.

The starting point for all MEOC participants is this free interactive workshop that outlines the four steps in the college process: admissions, financial aid, career planning and study skills.

The workshop lasts approximately two to three hours. Pre-registration is required.

VFW, Legion spaghetti supper

HARRISON — The Harrison VFW and the American Legion at 176 Waterford Road will have a spaghetti supper from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13.

Meal is $7 per person. Following the supper there will be a rent-a-veteran auction. Rent a veteran for up to three hours for small jobs or to drive you shopping. All proceeds benefit the building fund.

Refreshments at 5:30 p.m. will be followed by opening tunes with the Franklin County Fiddlers at 6 and a community sing-along at 6:30.

Harrison Rec trip to Red Claws

HARRISON — Harrison Parks & Recreation will present a trip to see the Maine Red Claws play the Tulsa 66ers on Sunday, Jan. 5, at the Portland Expo.

Cost of $15 per person includes side center court ticket and transportation. Children under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

The bus will leave Harrison Town Office public parking lot at 2:30 p.m. Participants are asked to arrive at 2:15. The bus will arrive back in Harrison around 8:30.

Register at the Harrison Town Office between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Payment is due upon registration. Deadline is Friday, Dec. 20, if seats are still available.

Participates will receive Thundersticks, join in opening ceremonies holding the giant American Living Flag, watch the National Act Dunking Team at halftime and kids can ask for players’ autographs at the end of the game.

The tickets make great stocking stuffers, Christmas or birthday gifts.
