You’ll have to forgive the Portland Pirates if they attempt to start goaltender Louis Domingue in every game the team plays against the Providence Bruins for the rest of the season.
The strategy has unwittingly worked so far for the Pirates and young keeper.
Domingue stopped 31 of the 33 shots he faced and Andy Miele scored with 11:54 to play in regulation as the Pirates snapped a five-game winless streak with a 4-2 victory over the Bruins in Providence on Sunday.
“We just played a smart, simple road game, Louis was good, and we found a way to win,” Pirates coach Ray Edwards said. “It was a good way to end the weekend.”
Domingue has made three career starts in the AHL — two this season — all against the Bruins. He’s won each of the three starts. In his two wins and four overall appearances this season, he is 2-0-0 with a 2.27 GAA.
“It’s a tough situation for him to come in, not even get a practice and anything else, and you have to give him a lot of credit to him for doing well in his start today,” Edwards said.
His appearance in Sunday’s game came a day after he was recalled from Gwinnett of the ECHL and helps give the Pirates’ regular tandem of Mark Visentin and Mike Lee some much-needed rest.
“Vis has been playing a lot of hockey,” Edwards said. “It was a good chance to get a break today, and it was a good job by Louis to find a way to get a win.”
Mathieu Brisebois collected a pair of assists for the Pirates, and Brandon Gormley scored his first goal of the season to start the scoring in the opening frame.
“We have to start generating offense from (the blue line),” Edwards said. “We’re by far the bottom of the league as far as creating offense from the blue line, so it was nice to get one (Sunday).”
Darian Dziurzynski extended the Pirates’ lead in the second period after a scrum in front of Bruins goalie Niklas Svedberg, pushing the rebound into the Providence net for his first goal of the year.
Carter Camper and Nick Johnson netted goals later in the second to tie the game, setting the stage for Miele’s third-period winner.
“For us to be the team that we want to be, we need Andy to be a top player, so hopefully that will get him feeling a little bit better,” Edwards said. “Just getting the win tonight is good for the group.”
Chris Brown and Brisebois picked up the assists on Miele’s seventh of the year, giving Brisebois his first career multipoint game.
Providence put the pressure on Domingue, but with less than a second left, Tobias Rieder sealed the victory for the Pirates with an empty net goal, giving him his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Gilbert Brulé also registered an assist, giving him at least a point in seven consecutive games played.
The Pirates get back to action Wednesday when they face the Bruins at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, their second of three meetings in a week’s time. Puck drops at 7 p.m. Pirates fans who bring a canned or nonperishable food item to the game will receive a pair of tickets to a game in January game.
