NEW VINEYARD — Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office worked Friday to determine the cause of an overnight fire that destroyed a vacant home at 1814 New Vineyard Road.

The single-family home owned by Wilfred Daggett Jr. has been empty for about four weeks, fire Chief Douglas Churchill said.

Someone driving by noticed the fire at about 2:30 a.m. and reported it, he said. No one was living in the rental property, which was located next to Our Village Market.

When firefighters arrived, the home was engulfed in flames, Churchill said. A large shed and garage close to the home also burned, but remained standing, he said.

There was a lot of damage, Ken MacMasters, an investigator with the State Fire Marshal’s Office, said. The home sat on a knoll above the garage and shed.

Investigators were talking with the former tenants and the owner of the property, who is returning from an out-of-state trip, he said.

The house was insured, Churchill said. No one was injured during the fire and firefighters did not have any problems fighting the blaze.

Firefighters from New Sharon, Temple, Strong, New Portland and Farmington helped the New Vineyard department at the scene, which is on Route 27. The other departments were sent home about 6:30 a.m. Friday. New Vineyard firefighters stayed to watch for hot spots until nearly 8 a.m., the chief said.
