HARRINGTON (AP) — Thousands of Maine-made wreaths will soon be headed to Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington.

Maine-based Wreaths Across America is gearing up for the annual trip. The truckloads of wreaths are due to leave Harrington, Maine, this weekend.

This year, about 100,000 balsam wreaths are being shipped to Arlington, and even more are destined for veterans’ cemeteries and other locations elsewhere.

The tradition started in 1992 when Morrill Worcester found himself with 5,000 wreaths that he couldn’t bring to market. He had them delivered to Arlington with the help of Sen. Olympia Snowe. All told, more than 400,000 wreaths will be distributed this season.
