AUGUSTA (AP) — A judge has denied a new trial for a Maine man convicted of killing his girlfriend and his own father.

John Okie, of Newcastle, said in his appeal that his trial attorney failed to provide an adequate defense during his 2007 trial.

The Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/1dxOrJY ) reported that in a written order, a Superior Court judge disagreed, saying the now 27-year-old Okie’s lawyer provided an adequate defense and made reasonable decisions about when to file objections during the trial, and about whom to call as witnesses.

Okie had pleaded not criminally responsible to two murder charges. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison.

Prosecutors said Okie fatally beat 19-year-old Kents Hill student Alexandra “Aleigh” Mills in 2007 and days later fatally stabbed his father, 59-year-old John Okie Sr.
