PORTLAND — Zach Glazier, a running back who led the Winthrop/Monmouth cooperative football team to an undefeated regular season, won the 22nd John Taglienti Award on Sunday night.
The trophy is presented each year to the outstanding player in the small-school division of the Campbell Conference. With the expansion of Maine high school football to four classes this year, the award now represents Class D.
Glazier joins previous winners Lee St. Hilaire (twice), Jake Steele and Geoff Cobb as Winthrop players to take home the Taglienti, which is named after the legendary former Jay coach.
Jake Moody of Wells won the Class C equivalent, the Bruce Campbell Award, while Nicco DeLorenzo of Kennebunk received the Wight’s Sporting Goods Award for Class B.
Mike Hathaway and Mark Bonnevie of Class C champion Leavitt were named that division’s coach of the year and assistant coach of the year, respectively.
Glazier’s coach, Joel Stoneton, picked up Class D coach of the year honors, while Dirigo defensive coordinator Pat Mooney earned the nod as the top assistant.
Joe Rafferty of Kennebunk was Class B coach of the year.
In addition to being honored for its Class D state title, Oak Hill joined Mt. Ararat as winner of a sportsmanship award from the local officials’ board. That banner covers both Class C and D schools.
