American Education Week — Nov. 18-22 — presents all Americans with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate public education and honor individuals who are making a difference in ensuring that every child receives a quality education.

Having been a teacher in Lewiston for many years, I know how hard the professionals in this city work. The teachers and support staff keep schools running on a daily basis — keeping students safe, healthy and ready to learn in a very challenging environment.

As part of “Raise Your Hand for Student Success” pledge, the National Education Association is asking that all educators be respected and treated as professionals and be included in key education policy discussions and decisions.

During this American Education Week, I hope every citizen of Lewiston can find the time to thank educators for all that they do.
