This November, I find myself thankful to be healthy in mind and body — especially body.
In the past year, among countless potential accidents, I managed to dodge the driver running the red light at Lisbon and Main as he took a left directly into oncoming traffic. I, and several Longley Elementary students, avoided being struck by a woman running a stop sign on Birch Street, springing quickly back on to the curb as she unexpectedly surged forward. And I did not pull out of the Verizon parking lot into the path of the young man rocketing down Sabattus Street, having heard him coming before I saw him.
Perhaps those people, and many other Lewiston drivers whose self-absorption supersedes safety, should be thankful to the drivers and pedestrians who follow traffic rules and cautiously keep an eye out (and a foot over the brake) for the dangerous driving habits of others. Our vigilance is what delivers them safely to their loved ones this Thanksgiving, and every other day of the year.
