WATERFORD — The 14th annual Foliage 5k and Fun Run was held Oct. 13 in Waterford Flats, with 37 kids doing the mile fun run and more than 150 participating in the 5K.
As a special surprise this year, Arnie and Linda Elton of Whitehouse, Ohio, were taking part, fulfilling a bucket list to run a race in every state in the country. They chose Waterford in Maine. The two 65-year-olds came in 96th and 97th in the 5K.
Saige McGinnis, 12, of Harrison, won the female overall one-mile fun run for the girls, with Matt McCaffrey, 10, of Franklinville, N.J., took the overall for the boys.
First-placers in various age groups, 6 through 12, were Eva Brannan, 6, of Lunenburg, Mass.; Jake Blais, 6, of Naples; Luci Bourgeois, 7, of Pownal; Makoto Watanabe, 18, Hebron.
Other first placers in the 5K were Allsion Dillon, 13, East Providence, R.I.; Andrew Chingos, 11, Brunswick; Kari Eldridge, 18, Naples; Peter Miller, 17, South Paris; Nina Planson, 26, New Gloucester; Benjamin Grimmig, 23, Summitt, N.J.; Jamie Toohey, 36, Waterford; Gardner Waldeier, 31, Waterford.
Also, Mary Yearl, 40, Newton, Mass.; Patrick Ridlon, 42, Casco; Anne St. Pierre, 55, Berkley, Mass.; Brian Shibles, 53, Waterford; Nancy Kluck, 60, Bridgton; Peter Rearick, 61, Hebron; Kathy Greenleaf, 71, Norway; Peter Child, 70, Freeport; and Bart Hague, 86, Waterford, who runs every year.
Lots of chili was brought by volunteers as part of the Waterford/Harrison PTO fundraiser. Hot dogs, muffins and pie were also sold. Amy Sawyer, Waterford, won for the chili cook-off for a second year.
The fall race is always held on the Sunday of the Columbus Day weekend.
