NEW GLOUCESTER — People waited for runner Dennis McCann and his team Monday at the site of the future New Gloucester Veterans Memorial Park at Upper Gloucester.
McCann, joined by his brothers Rick and Dan, their sons David, Thomas and Nick, and his father, Dick, ran a mile bearing flags in support of the “Where’s Dennis?” campaign that supports fundraising for the park that will honor all veterans from the town from the Revolutionary War to now.
Dennis McCann started his campaign on Flag Day in June and aims to run 950 miles in honor of the New Gloucester veterans who will have their names inscribed on memorial plaques. So far, he has run 410 miles.
State Rep. Ellie Espling, R-New Gloucester, thanked the Veterans Monument Committee for their efforts to bring a memorial park to land donated by the McCann family.
“Today, we honor those men and women whose personal sacrifices have seen our nation through the toughest of times. They represent everything that has made this country great,” Espling said in her Veterans Day address.
The New Gloucester Historical Society and AMVET Post No. 6 are raising funds for the park.
