PORTLAND (AP) — A group that’s fighting a plan by the city of Portland to sell a large part of Congress Square Plaza to a hotel owner says it has enough petitions for a referendum on its effort to protect open spaces.

The Friends of Congress Square Park had 80 days to get 1,500 signatures to put the proposal to voters. President Frank Turek says it took only one day to gather the signatures.

The sale of the land is the subject of legal action.

The group wants to enact an ordinance that would add 35 open spaces to the list of protected lands and to make it more difficult to sell them. If successful, the effort could undo the sale of Congress Square Plaza.
